England and Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and the Scots also share a group together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
