The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
