Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
