In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
